The county includes the city of Salt Lake City, as well as several other smaller cities and towns including West Valley, West Jordan, South Jordan, Murray, Magna, Copperton, Lark, Herriman, Bluffdale, Midvale, Millcreek, Sandy and Draper.

To the north and east, the county is bordered by the Wasatch Mountains and the Uinta National Forest. To the south, the county is bordered by Utah County, and to the west, it is bordered by Tooele County.
